The Unlock | Genesis 1: In the Beginning…God

Genesis 1: In the Beginning…God

Key Verse

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1

The Bible isn’t just history. It’s God’s invitation to understand Him.

Today, we’re unlocking Genesis 1.

Let’s open the door.

Context

Genesis is the very first book of the Bible. The word Genesis means beginning or origin. This chapter answers life’s biggest questions:

  • Where did we come from?
  • Who created everything?
  • Why are we here?

Long before science textbooks… Long before governments… Long before nations…

There was God.

Genesis 1 establishes one truth that every other page of Scripture builds upon:

God is Creator. Everything else is creation.

Who wrote Genesis? Moses.

God inspired Moses to record the history of creation while leading Israel through the wilderness around 1400 BC.

Who was it written for? The nation of Israel.

After generations of slavery in Egypt, where people worshiped many false gods, God reminded His people that there is only one true Creator.

What Happened? Genesis 1 records God’s creation of the universe in six days.

  • Day 1: Light
  • Day 2: Sky
  • Day 3: Land, seas, vegetation
  • Day 4: Sun, moon, stars
  • Day 5: Fish and birds
  • Day 6: Animals and mankind

Everything God made was intentional. Nothing happened by accident. Nothing surprised Him. Nothing was outside His control.

Then God looked over everything He made and declared, “It is very good.”

When? The Bible doesn’t give us a modern calendar date. Instead, Genesis tells us that creation marks the beginning of time itself.

History starts here.

  • Everything before Genesis 1 belongs to eternity.
  • Everything after Genesis 1 belongs to humanity.

Where? The events take place across the newly created heavens and earth. There are no cities. No nations. No civilizations. Just God bringing order out of chaos.

Why? Why did God create? Not because He was lonely. Not because He needed help. Not because He lacked anything.

  • God created because He is love.
  • He desired relationship.
  • Creation displays His glory.
  • Humanity reflects His image.

 Every mountain… Every ocean… Every sunrise… Every heartbeat…

 Points back to Him.

How? One phrase appears over and over: “And God said…” God didn’t struggle. He didn’t experiment. He didn’t improve failed attempts. He simply spoke. His Word carried power. His voice created reality.

This is why God’s Word still has power today. The same God who spoke light into darkness can speak hope into your darkest season.

Let’s Unlock This

Genesis isn’t really about creation. It’s about the Creator. Sometimes we become so fascinated with how God created that we forget to worship Who created.

Genesis shifts our focus.

  • Before your career… God.
  • Before your family… God.
  • Before your pain… God.
  • Before your dreams… God.

Everything begins with Him. And when life feels like it’s falling apart, remember… If God can create order out of chaos, He can certainly do the same in your life.

Practical Application

Imagine walking into your house after a tornado. Furniture flipped over. Glass everywhere. Nothing is where it belongs. You wouldn’t panic forever. You would start restoring order. Many of us feel like our lives look exactly like that.

  • Broken relationships.
  • Financial pressure.
  • Health concerns.
  • Stress.
  • Fear.
  • Anxiety.

Genesis 1 reminds us that God specializes in bringing order where there is chaos. Maybe He doesn’t fix everything overnight. But He always begins by speaking.

That’s why spending time in His Word matters.

  • His voice still creates.
  • His voice still heals.
  • His voice still restores.

Ask Yourself

  1. What area of my life feels dark and without form?
  2. Am I inviting God’s voice into that area?
  3. Have I been focusing more on my problems than on my Creator?

Prayer

Dear Heavenly, Most Gracious, Father,

Thank You for reminding me that You are the Creator of heaven and earth. Nothing is impossible for You. Just as You brought light into darkness, bring light into every dark place in my life. Help me trust Your power more than my circumstances. Teach me to begin every day remembering that everything starts with You.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

The Challenge

Today, every time you step outside… Look around.

  • The sky.
  • The trees.
  • ·The birds.
  • ·The clouds.

Instead of simply seeing creation… Take a moment to worship the Creator.
