The Unlock | Marriage & Money: Unlocking the Heart of Trust

Key Scripture

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”  Proverbs 3:5–6

Money has a way of asking questions we didn’t know were living in our hearts.

Questions like:

  • Who do I trust?
  • What makes me feel secure?
  • What am I afraid of losing?
  • Do I believe God is truly my Provider?

Many couples believe their greatest financial challenge will be earning enough money; however, the Bible suggests something different. Our greatest challenge is learning to trust God enough to become one.

From the very beginning, marriage was never about two people simply sharing a home. It was about two people learning to share a life. A life centered on God. A life marked by love. A life built on trust.

Genesis 2:24

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

Notice what God didn’t say. He didn’t say become one emotionally. Become one spiritually. Become one physically. Then keep everything else separate. He simply said… Become one.

That oneness reaches every part of marriage, including the way we think about money. Not because money is the goal. But because trust is.

Whether you’ve been married for six months or sixty years… Whether you’re just beginning your journey or have weathered countless seasons together… God’s invitation is exactly the same. Become one.

Not one in appearance. One in purpose. One in faith. One in love. One in stewardship.

Marriage isn’t a competition to determine who contributes more. One spouse may earn more income. The other may sacrifice career opportunities to raise children, care for aging parents, manage the home, encourage the family, or carry unseen burdens that never appear on a paycheck.

God never measures a marriage by income. He measures faithfulness. Every unseen act of love matters to Him. One of the greatest misunderstandings about money is believing that what comes into our hands belongs to us. The Bible teaches the opposite.

Psalm 24:1 “The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein.”

Everything. The promotion. The business. The bonus. The inheritance. The investments. The paycheck. None of it belongs with us. It all belongs to God. We are not owners. We are stewards and that changes everything. Because stewardship asks a different question.

Instead of asking… “How do I protect what’s mine?” We begin asking… “Lord, how do we faithfully manage what belongs to You?”

Faith isn’t built after success arrives. Faith is built before it. Before the promotion. Before the business grows. Before retirement. Before financial freedom. Long before God increases what He places in our hands, He shapes the hearts that will hold it.

Jesus said in Luke 16:10 “He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much.”

  • Notice He didn’t say wealth changes people. It reveals them.
  • Money doesn’t create generosity… It reveals it.
  • Money doesn’t create fear…. It exposes it.
  • Money doesn’t create trust… It reveals where our trust has been all along.

The greatest financial decisions are rarely made surrounding a bank account balance. They’re made in the heart.

Long before money reaches an account, it has already passed through our belief system.

  • Do I trust God?
  • Do I trust my spouse?
  • Do I believe we are building something together?

Financial unity begins in ordinary moments. Praying before making decisions. Choosing honest conversations over hidden fears. Extending grace when mistakes happen. Celebrating one another’s victories instead of comparing contributions. That’s where biblical stewardship grows. At home. In the sanctuary. In worship together.

One day Jesus was asked the greatest commandment. He didn’t answer with rules about money. He answered with love.

Matthew 22:37, 39 “…You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind… You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Your spouse is the closest neighbor God has given you. If we truly love God, that love should transform how we love the person standing beside us. Money should never become more protected than the relationship God has called us to protect.

When fear leads… We grasp. We compare. We keep score. We build walls.

But when love leads… We communicate. We sacrifice. We encourage. We trust.

Because perfect love drives out fear.

1 John 4:18

Fear asks, “What if I don’t have enough?” Faith answers, “God has always been enough.”

The Unlock

So how do we live this out?

  • We pray together.
  • We dream together.
  • We plan together.
  • We give together.
  • We make difficult decisions together.
  • We celebrate victories together.
  • We carry losses together.

We remember that every dollar is temporary, but every opportunity to love one another is eternal. Whether your family chooses one bank account, separate accounts with shared stewardship, or another wise system, don’t let the structure become more important than the spirit. The goal is not identical financial systems. The goal is unified hearts. Because no bank account can create oneness. Only Christ can.

Perhaps the greatest question isn’t… “Can I trust my spouse with money?”

Perhaps the greater question is… “Can God trust us with what He has entrusted to our marriage?”

That question changes everything. Because this has never really been about the money. It’s about worship. It’s about surrender. It’s about becoming the kind of husband and wife who believe that God is their Provider, Jesus is their foundation, and love is worth more than anything money could ever buy.

One day the promotions will end. The careers will end. The paychecks will stop. The investments will be left behind. But the love you cultivated… The trust you built… The prayers you prayed… The generosity you lived… The faith you shared… Those are eternal investments. So don’t spend your marriage protecting what cannot last. Spend your marriage building what will. Because when two people place their trust completely in God… They no longer have to live in fear of one another. They are finally free to become one.

Prayer

Father, thank You for the gift of marriage and for every blessing You have placed in our hands. Teach us to trust You more than our income, our savings, or our plans. Remove every fear that causes us to cling tightly to what was never ours to begin with. Fill our homes with humility, honesty, generosity, and grace. Help us love You with all our hearts and love one another with the same faithfulness You have shown us. May our marriages reflect the Gospel, not only in how we speak and serve, but also in how we steward every resource You’ve entrusted to us. Build in us a unity that no financial circumstance can shake. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The Challenge

This week, don’t begin with your budget. Begin with your heart.

  • Ask yourself: Am I trusting in money to provide what only God can?
  • Then ask your spouse: How can we grow in faith together this week?

Because where faith grows… Trust follows.

Where trust follows… Love flourishes.

And where love flourishes… The world catches a glimpse of Christ.
